“Promote To Admin” Option in Dynamics CRM 2016 Update1

Introduction:

With the release of Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 Update1, new features have been introduced to make life easier. Promote To Admin is one of the feature added in Update1 which is used by administrator to assign system administrator security role to other users. Promote To Admin button is added on usersentity (where we can add new user, edit information about user, activate/deactivate user records, manage the teams & roles, and license assigned to users).

Earlier, Administrator user could assign or manage the system administrator security role by following steps:

System → Settings → Security → Users → Select the user that we want to assign system administrator role → Manage roles → Select system administrator option → Click on OK.

Now using Promote To Admin button, administrator user can easily assign or manage the system administrator security role to another user. There is no need to assign the system administrator role manually.

Please see the below example to assign security role using Promote To Admin button:

1. Sign-in CRM with administrator privileges and users can see the Promote To Admin button exists on users entity:Ribbon Button

 2. Select any one user record that does not have system administrator privileges and click on Promote To Admin button:

3. Click on “OK” in the below screen:

4. You can now see two privileges in Manage User Roles after performing above-mentioned steps. You can see how the privileges will be changed in the below shown images:

If user signs in with other privileges (Not the system administrator) then they will get following error while performing Promote To Admin:

Note:

1. To use Promote To Admin operation, user should have system administrator privilege.

2. Promote To Admin operation performs on only one user record at a time.

3. Promote To Admin option is used to assign system administrator security role only.

Conclusion:

Microsoft has added multiple features to new Microsoft Dynamics CRM 2016 Update1, which will assist users for easy functioning. This blog discusses about a new option of Promote to Admin, added to the new update. This can help to assign system administrator security role on selected user entity.
